TPMS CAN timeout/Not equipped

Views: UK: 9 EN: 26 RU: 11
AI status
Completed
ready
Completed 100%
Page language: EN

Causes

  • Vehicle not factory-equipped with TPMS (message never present)
  • TPMS control module missing, asleep, or powered off
  • Open/short or intermittent wiring/connector fault on TPMS CAN pair or power/ground circuits
  • Failed TPMS control module or CAN transceiver
  • Dead or missing TPMS wheel sensors (no sensor traffic to TPMS ECU)
  • Blown fuse or lost supply/ground to TPMS ECU

Symptoms

  • TPMS warning lamp or message illuminated or flashing on dash
  • No tire pressure values shown on cluster/infotainment
  • Scan tool shows U1114 or no TPMS messages present
  • Possible related network faults or communication errors with other modules on same CAN segment

What to check

  • Confirm vehicle equipment level/build sheet to verify if TPMS should be present
  • Connect a capable scan tool and read stored/current U1114 and related network DTCs
  • On scan tool, observe whether TPMS module is listed and if any TPMS live data/messages appear
  • Check fuses and power/ground circuits for TPMS ECU
  • Visually inspect TPMS ECU connector, wiring harness and nearby splices for damage or corrosion
  • Check for aftermarket devices connected to CAN or power circuits and remove/disconnect for test

Signal parameters

  • CAN recessive state: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (small differential)
  • CAN dominant state: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V (approx. 2 V differential)
  • Typical CAN bus termination: ≈ 60 ohms across CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120Ω in parallel)
  • Common CAN data rates used on chassis networks: 250 kbps or 500 kbps (verify for specific model)
  • TPMS messages are intermittent (sensor transmissions) and TPMS ECU messages may appear at ignition/on startup — absence of expected frames indicates timeout

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify vehicle is supposed to have TPMS (VIN/equipment list). If not equipped, document and clear code.
  2. Record freeze frame and full DTC list. Note any other U-codes or CAN errors.
  3. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with TPMS ECU. If module not listed or no response, proceed to network checks.
  4. Check fuses and measure battery voltage at TPMS ECU power pin with ignition ON. Repair supply issues before further diagnostics.
  5. Visually inspect and wiggle-test TPMS ECU connector and harness for loose pins or corrosion. Repair as needed.
  6. Backprobe CAN_H and CAN_L at the TPMS ECU connector with ignition ON. Verify recessive voltages and compare to expected (see signal_params).
  7. Measure resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L with power off; expect ~60 Ω. If open or very high, suspect broken wire/connector or missing termination.
  8. If voltages/resistance abnormal, trace wiring toward gateway/other modules and repair open/short/ground faults. Use wiring diagrams for pinouts.
  9. If bus looks OK but TPMS ECU does not respond, check for intermittent activity with oscilloscope while vehicle awake and during wheel movement (or sensor re-learn).
  10. Disable or remove aftermarket modules that may be connected to CAN and re-test.
  11. If wiring and bus are good and the module still does not respond, consider replacing/reprogramming TPMS ECU per factory procedure. After repair, clear codes and perform relearn/test drive to confirm.
  12. Document repairs and if vehicle is not equipped, note that U1114 may be expected and can be suppressed in some scan tools.

Likely causes

  • Connector corrosion or pin damage at TPMS ECU or gateway
  • Open/short on CAN_H or CAN_L near TPMS module
  • TPMS ECU has no battery/ignition supply or bad ground
  • TPMS module CAN transceiver failed or bus termination missing
  • Vehicle not equipped — no TPMS ECU fitted from factory

Fault status

⚠️ Status
TPMS CAN timeout: TPMS module did not respond on CAN bus or vehicle not equipped with TPMS module.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-3.0 hours
