ASC/TCL/ABS(CAN message)

AI status

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open/shorted/damaged CAN wiring or connectors to the ABS/ASC module
  • ABS/ASC module power or ground fault (blown fuse, poor ground, low battery voltage)
  • Faulty ABS/ASC control module (internal failure)
  • Missing or failed CAN termination resistor(s)
  • Intermittent connector corrosion or physical damage (water ingress, bent pins)
  • Software/firmware mismatch or module configuration error after replacement

Symptoms

  • ABS / ASC / TCL warning lamp illuminated
  • Traction control / stability control disabled or non-functional
  • ABS functions may be disabled (longer stopping distances possible)
  • Possible other network modules reporting communication errors
  • Loss of related features (cruise control, ABS-based functions)

What to check

  • Use a diagnostic scanner to read U1122 and any other U- or B- codes from all modules; note freeze frame and time of occurrence
  • Verify battery voltage (12V nominal) and check charge system condition
  • Inspect fuses and relays supplying ABS/ASC module power
  • Visually inspect ABS/ASC wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, bent pins or water intrusion
  • Check CAN bus for presence of other network errors or bus-off events on a scan tool
  • Measure CAN_H and CAN_L voltages at the ABS connector with ignition ON (see signal_params)

Signal parameters

  • Battery/ignition supply to ABS ECU: ~11–14.5 V with key ON
  • Ground: low resistance to chassis (near 0 Ω)
  • CAN idle voltages (with no dominant bits): CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (each about mid-rail)
  • CAN dominant state voltages: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V (approximate values)
  • Termination resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L: ≈ 60 Ω (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)
  • Short to battery or ground will show CAN_H or CAN_L near 12 V or 0 V respectively

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM-level scan tool. Confirm U1122 and record any additional U-codes. Check for module presence and CAN traffic for the ABS/ASC module.
  2. Verify battery voltage and ignition supply. If battery low, charge/retest before further diagnosis.
  3. Inspect ABS/ASC module connectors and wiring for visible damage, corrosion, or loose pins. Repair as necessary.
  4. Check fuses/relays related to ABS power/IGN. Replace any blown fuses and retest communication.
  5. With ignition ON, measure CAN_H and CAN_L at the ABS connector and compare to signal parameters. Look for stuck high/low or no signal.
  6. Measure termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L with key OFF. If not ~60 Ω, trace missing/failed terminator or open circuit.
  7. If voltages and termination are OK, perform continuity checks from ABS connector to main CAN bus junctions and to other modules to find opens/shorts.
  8. Use a scope or CAN BUS analyzer to inspect waveform integrity and to identify noise, dominant-state lock, or bus-off faults. Wiggle harness while monitoring for intermittent changes.
  9. If wiring and bus are sound but the module fails to communicate, attempt reprogramming/reflash if available and recommended by manufacturer. Verify correct module coding after replacement.
  10. If module remains non-communicative and all wiring, power, ground, and bus tests pass, replace ABS/ASC control module per manufacturer procedures. Clear codes and road-test to verify repair.

Likely causes

  • ABS/ASC ECU not powered or improperly grounded
  • CAN_H or CAN_L open or shorted near ABS/ASC module
  • Poor connector pin contact at ABS/ASC module
  • Failed ABS/ASC module electronics
  • Incorrect or missing termination (open/shorted resistor) on CAN pair

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Communication fault: invalid or missing CAN messages from ASC/TCL/ABS module — may disable ABS/traction control.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-3 hours
