Ignition Output Off/On/Start

Causes
- Faulty ignition switch or key cylinder
- Intermittent or low battery/charging system voltage
- Corroded/loose connectors or grounds in ignition or power circuits
- Faulty body control module (BCM), power distribution module (PDM) or PCM
- Damaged wiring or short between ignition circuits
- CAN/LIN bus noise, wiring damage or poor termination
Symptoms
- Intermittent no-crank or no-start condition
- Unexpected engine shutdown or stall
- Accessory or ignition powered devices turn off/on unexpectedly
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or network warning lamp illuminated
- Starting allowed only intermittently or only in certain key positions
- Stored related communication or powertrain codes
What to check
- Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool; note ignition state at fault
- Check battery voltage at rest and during cranking (expect ~12.4–12.8V at rest, >9V during crank)
- Visually inspect ignition switch connector, wiring, fuses and relays for damage/corrosion
- Check module grounds and power supply circuits for proper continuity and voltage
- Inspect for aftermarket devices (alarms, remote starters) and disconnect for test
- Scan for CAN/LIN bus errors (U-codes, bus-off, high error counters)
Signal parameters
- Ignition feed voltage: Off ≈ 0–1V, On/accessory ≈ battery voltage (~11–14V), Start ≈ battery voltage under cranking (often 9–12V)
- Expected ignition start duration: brief (typically < 10–20 seconds) while cranking
- CAN bus idle differential voltage: approx 2.5V per line (2.5V/2.5V) or 0V differential; bus baud commonly 500 kb/s or 250 kb/s depending on vehicle
- Ignition message frequency: state change messages on bus when key position changes; no continuous toggling expected
- High error counts, bus-off, or missing node frames indicate network-level problems
Diagnostic algorithm
- Retrieve all DTCs and freeze-frame data; record ignition position and battery voltage at time of fault.
- Verify battery condition and charging system; recharge or replace battery if low and re-run tests.
- Perform visual inspection of ignition switch connector, harness, fuses, relays and module connectors; repair any corrosion or damage.
- Check power and ground circuits to BCM/PCM/PDM for proper voltage and continuity with key Off/On/Start.
- Monitor ignition feed voltage with a DVOM while cycling key to reproduce the fault; look for unexpected drops or noise.
- Use an oscilloscope to capture ignition control line and CAN/LIN waveforms while reproducing the failure; compare to known-good patterns.
- Disconnect any aftermarket immobilizer/remote-start device and retest to rule out interference.
- If network errors are present, trace CAN/LIN wiring and connectors; repair shorts/open circuits and retest.
- If wiring and power are good, update module software/calibrations per manufacturer bulletins and clear codes.
- If problem persists after wiring and software verification, consider module bench testing or replacement (start with the module that logged U302C).
- After repairs, clear codes and perform road/test cycles to verify fault does not return and no related codes are present.
Likely causes
- Loose/corroded connector at ignition switch or module
- Weak battery or failing charging system causing voltage dips during crank
- Faulty ignition switch contacts not switching cleanly between Off/On/Start
- Intermittent BCM/PDM internal fault or failed transistor that drives ignition output
- Aftermarket immobilizer/remote start interfering with ignition state
Fault status
Status
