Causes

  • Open or short in the right second-row frontal squib wiring
  • Poor, corroded or detached connector at the airbag module or SRS control module
  • Failed or damaged right second-row frontal airbag (squib)
  • Faulty SRS/airbag control module or internal driver circuitry
  • Recent deployment or improper repair (unresolved wiring damage or incorrect component replacement)
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to wiring or connector

Symptoms

  • SRS/Airbag warning lamp illuminated
  • Stored B0039 (and possibly related SRS codes) in vehicle memory
  • Partial or full disablement of second-row right frontal stage 1 deployment
  • Possible complement codes for open/short conditions in airbag circuit

What to check

  • Use a scan tool to read/record all stored SRS codes and freeze-frame data
  • Visually inspect the second-row right seat, seat track, B-pillar and connector for damage, corrosion or water intrusion
  • Check battery voltage and charging system (low voltage can cause SRS faults)
  • Follow manufacturer-safe procedure: disconnect battery and wait recommended time before touching SRS components
  • Inspect and verify connector pins are not pushed out, bent, or corroded
  • Perform continuity/resistance check of the squib circuit with connectors disconnected (see signal_params)

Signal parameters

  • Typical squib (airbag) circuit low resistance when intact: ~0.5–5 Ω (vehicle-specific — consult OE data)
  • Open-circuit reading: infinite/OL (indicates broken wiring or disconnected squib)
  • Short-to-ground reading: ~0 Ω (indicates short to chassis ground)
  • Short-to-battery reading or presence of battery voltage on squib line with ignition on indicates short to power (should not usually be present)
  • No deployment voltage should be measured at squib connector with ignition on; deployment is a high-current event commanded by the module only

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: disable the SRS system per manufacturer instructions (battery negative disconnect and wait specified time) before inspecting connectors or wiring
  2. Connect an OEM-capable scan tool. Read and record all SRS codes, freeze frame and live data. Note any related codes.
  3. Verify battery voltage is within normal range. Low/unstable voltage can create spurious SRS faults.
  4. Visually inspect the second-row right seat assembly, connectors, wiring harness along seat tracks and B-pillar for damage, corrosion, signs of water ingress or previous repairs.
  5. With ignition off and battery disabled, disconnect the squib connector(s) and inspect pins for corrosion, damage or pushed-out terminals. Repair connector as needed.
  6. Measure squib resistance at the disconnected airbag connector: compare to OE specification or expected low-resistance range (~0.5–5 Ω). An open or very high reading indicates a broken squib or open wiring; a near-zero reading indicates a short.
  7. Check continuity between the squib connector and the SRS control module pin for open/short conditions. Inspect grounds and chassis connections.
  8. Reconnect and, following safe procedures, perform a wiggle test of the wiring while monitoring live resistance/data to identify intermittent faults.
  9. If wiring and connectors pass, test or replace the second-row right frontal airbag module (squib) per manufacturer procedure. If squib replacement performed, clear codes and re-test.
  10. If squib and harness are good, suspect SRS control module fault — verify with OEM diagnostic tests, perform module programming/initialization if required, or replace module per OE instructions.
  11. After repair, clear codes, perform SRS system self-test and verify no DTCs return. Document repair and any replaced SRS components.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/damaged connector at the seat or module
  • Broken/shorted wiring harness in seat or B-pillar area from movement
  • Failed squib inside the second-row right frontal airbag
  • Faulty SRS control module output stage for that channel

Fault status

⚠️ Status
SRS control module reports fault in second-row right frontal Stage 1 deployment control circuit. Deployment for that stage may be disabled until the fault is resolved.
