Platform lights short to positive

Type: B — Body

Causes

  • Damaged/shorted wiring contacting battery positive or B+ feed
  • Faulty lamp or LED module with internal short to B+
  • Corroded or water-intruded connector causing unintended B+ connection
  • Incorrectly installed aftermarket accessory tapping the lighting circuit
  • Body/lighting control module output transistor or driver failed
  • Poor terminal seating or connector pin damage

Symptoms

  • Platform/interior lights permanently on or uncontrolled
  • Battery drain / parasitic battery discharge when vehicle is off
  • Fuses blowing repeatedly for interior lighting circuit
  • Related lighting functions inoperative or intermittent
  • Warning message or lamp fault stored in BCM

What to check

  • Read and record all stored body/module codes and freeze frame data from the BCM
  • Visually inspect wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, or signs of overheating
  • Check fuses for the lighting circuit and inspect fuse holder for damage
  • Disconnect the platform light connector and observe whether the DTC clears or symptom changes
  • Measure voltage at the lamp connector with lights OFF (should be low/off) and ON (approx. battery voltage)
  • Perform continuity check between lamp circuit and battery positive to confirm short

Signal parameters

  • Expected with lights OFF: output/control pin near 0 V (or high impedance), no more than a few hundred mV
  • Expected with lights ON: output approx. battery voltage (11–14.5 V)
  • If short to positive: control pin reads ~battery voltage even with switch/programmed OFF
  • Typical incandescent lamp current: 0.3–2 A (depending on bulb); LED modules typically 20–500 mA
  • A true short to B+ will show very low resistance between the circuit and B+ using an ohmmeter (with battery disconnected)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify: Retrieve DTC B1215 and any related codes from the BCM. Note conditions (key on/off, lights on/off).
  2. Reproduce symptom: Turn lights ON and OFF, check behavior and battery voltage. Confirm lights behave as reported.
  3. Visual inspection: Inspect lamp housing, connector, and wiring harness along the route for abrasions, pinching, corrosion or repair splices.
  4. Isolate lamp: With ignition OFF, disconnect the platform light connector. Clear codes and cycle system. If code clears and symptom changes, suspect lamp/connector/harness downstream of connector.
  5. Voltage check: With connector connected and lights OFF, backprobe the control/output pin — if it reads battery voltage without command, suspect short to B+ or module fault.
  6. Continuity/resistance test: With battery removed or circuit isolated, measure resistance between the circuit and battery positive. Low resistance indicates short to B+.
  7. Current draw test: Measure parasitic current from the battery with vehicle asleep. If excessive, remove fuses for lighting circuits one at a time to identify which circuit is feeding the drain.
  8. Wiggle test & isolate sections: With connector connected, gently flex wiring along harness to reproduce the fault; isolate and test sections to locate chafe/damage.
  9. Swap/bench-test: If practical, bench-test suspect lamp/LED assembly or replace with known-good unit to confirm fault.
  10. BCM output check: If harness and lamp are good, test the BCM output driver for the circuit (compare to known-good output or factory procedure). Repair or replace module only after confirming wiring/loads are correct.
  11. Repair: Repair/replace damaged wiring, connectors, or lamp assembly. Protect repaired harness (loom, conduit, routing) and reseal connectors.
  12. Verify: Clear codes, perform system checks and road/overnight test to confirm no reoccurrence and acceptable battery drain.

Likely causes

  • Chafed insulation where harness rubs against bodywork and contacts a B+ conductor
  • Lamp/LED assembly internal short between supply and output
  • Connector pin bent or displaced so it contacts the B+ terminal in the harness
  • Water ingress into lamp housing causing conductive path to B+
  • Aftermarket wiring tied into the wrong side of the circuit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Platform lights circuit short to positive detected by BCM — circuit at or near B+ when it should be off or switchable. Inspect lamp, harness, connectors and module outputs.
