SRS Airbag ECU Internal Fault

Type: B — Body

Causes

  • Internal ECU hardware failure (processor, board components)
  • Corrupted or failed EEPROM / internal memory
  • Intermittent or out-of-range supply voltage to the SRS ECU
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to the module
  • Poor ground or power connector problems
  • Software/firmware bug or failed update

Symptoms

  • Airbag / SRS warning lamp illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Stored DTC B161D (may be accompanied by other SRS or communication codes)
  • Possible disablement of airbag/pretensioner deployment
  • Diagnostic tool indicates module internal error or fails some self-tests
  • In some vehicles, chimes or additional warning messages appear

What to check

  • Use a capable scan tool to read all SRS and communication codes and freeze frame data
  • Inspect battery condition and charging system; verify stable supply voltage
  • Visually inspect SRS ECU connectors and wiring for corrosion, water, or damage
  • Check ground straps and chassis ground continuity for low resistance
  • Verify CAN/LIN bus communication to the airbag ECU from other modules
  • Inspect module mounting area for evidence of impact or water ingress

Signal parameters

  • VBATT (module supply) — should be stable within vehicle spec (nominal ~12–14.5 V when running)
  • Ground continuity/resistance to chassis — low ohms expected
  • Internal self-test status / internal fault flags reported by ECU
  • EEPROM/checksum status or software version as reported by scan tool
  • CAN/LIN bus status — module should be present on network and transmitting/receiving
  • Module watchdog/heartbeat status (if available from scan tool)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: follow manufacturer SRS safety procedures before working on the system (disable battery per manufacturer instructions and observe recommended wait time).
  2. Connect a qualified scan tool. Record all SRS and network fault codes and freeze frame data. Note any other modules reporting communication errors.
  3. Check battery voltage and charging system with engine off and running. Repair charging/battery faults before further diagnosis.
  4. Visually inspect the airbag ECU, connectors, and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water damage, or physical impact. Repair or replace damaged wiring/connector as needed.
  5. Verify power and ground at the ECU: measure supply voltage at the module connector and check ground continuity to chassis. Repair any supply/ground faults.
  6. Check CAN/LIN communication lines for proper termination, voltage levels, and presence of other SRS network messages. Repair bus faults.
  7. If supply, ground, and bus are good and the fault persists, attempt clearing the code and re-run self-tests. If B161D returns consistently, suspect internal module failure.
  8. Check for available ECU software updates or technical service bulletins addressing internal ECU faults; reflash only with OEM-approved procedures if applicable.
  9. If module replacement is required, replace with correct OEM unit and perform required coding/initialization and system checks. Verify all SRS subsystem sensors and devices are functional after replacement.
  10. After repair, clear codes, perform full SRS self-test with scan tool, and confirm no further faults remain. Restore any safety systems and confirm customer notification.

Likely causes

  • Failed internal memory or checksum error in the airbag ECU
  • Battery drain, low battery or charging system surge corrupted ECU operation
  • Corrosion/water in connector causing intermittent internal faults
  • Damaged PCB or components inside the module (impact, vibration, overvoltage)
  • Communication fault (CAN/LIN) causing the ECU to log internal error

Fault status

⚠️ Status
SRS Airbag ECU reports an internal fault. Airbag system may be disabled or operating with reduced functionality. Diagnostic inspection and repair or replacement of the airbag ECU is required.
