Causes

  • Blown fuse or faulty pump motor relay
  • Open, shorted or corroded wiring or connector to the pump motor
  • Failed hydraulic pump motor or internal short
  • Faulty ABS/ESC control module or internal driver circuit
  • Low battery voltage or poor battery/charging system connections
  • Intermittent connection due to water ingress or damaged harness

Symptoms

  • ABS and/or ESC warning lamp illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Brake/ABS assist feels reduced or altered (possible longer pedal travel)
  • Traction control/ESC disabled message
  • Pump motor runs loudly, intermittently, or not at all when ABS self-test or activation occurs
  • Possible battery drain or poor start if motor is shorted

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and all stored codes from ABS/ESC module with a capable scan tool
  • Visually inspect pump motor connector, harness, fuses and relays for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals
  • Check battery state of charge and charging system voltage (engine running ~13.5–14.8 V)
  • Inspect for water intrusion, rodent damage, or chafing in wiring near the pump assembly
  • Listen for pump operation during ABS self-test or when commanded by a scan tool

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage at pump connector (key ON / engine running): ~11–15 V expected depending on battery/charging state
  • Pump motor coil resistance (typical low-ohm range; often
  • Operating current when pump runs: can be several amps (typical range 5–25 A depending on design) — higher current may indicate binding or short
  • PWM duty cycle or command status from ABS module when commanding pump (varies by manufacturer)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all ABS/ESC codes and freeze-frame data. Note if C2161 is current or historic.
  2. Visually inspect harness, connector, fuse and relay related to the ABS pump. Repair obvious damage and clean corroded terminals.
  3. Verify battery and charging system health. Poor voltage can cause control faults; repair charging/battery issues first.
  4. With connector attached, measure supply voltage to pump connector (key ON, engine OFF; then engine running). Compare to battery voltage. Significant drop indicates wiring/connection or heavy load.
  5. Backprobe pump motor power and ground while commanding pump with a scan tool. Confirm motor receives proper voltage/command and that module outputs are present.
  6. With ignition OFF and connector disconnected, measure pump motor winding resistance. Low-ohm opens/shorts or infinite resistance indicate motor failure. Consult manufacturer spec.
  7. If motor draws excessive current when run (bench or in-vehicle), replace pump assembly. If motor does not receive command voltage but wiring is good, investigate pump relay and ABS module driver.
  8. Check continuity and resistance of power and ground circuits between fuse/relay and pump connector. Repair open/shorts as needed.
  9. If wiring, fuses, relay and motor test OK, suspect ABS/ESC control module fault — verify with manufacturer diagnostic procedures before module replacement.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform ABS/ESC self-test and road test to confirm no recurrence.

  • Failed pump motor (winding short or seized)
  • Blown fuse or failed relay supplying pump motor
  • Open or short in the pump motor power or ground circuit
