Causes

  • Damaged or corroded wiring or connector for grille shutter B position sensor

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full DTC list with a scan tool; attempt to actuate grille shutter via bi‑directional controls
  • Visually inspect the grille shutter B harness and connector for damage, corrosion, water, or loose pins
  • Backprobe sensor connector to check for 5V reference, ground, and signal while commanding shutter movement
  • Check continuity and resistance of wiring between sensor and ECM; inspect for shorts to battery or ground
  • Manually move shutter (if accessible) and observe sensor voltage change
  • Check for related codes that indicate communication or driver issues

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type: typically a position potentiometer or Hall-effect position sensor returning a variable voltage
  • Reference: ~5.0 V (from ECU) to sensor reference pin
  • Ground: 0 V (sensor ground/ECU ground)
  • Signal voltage at rest: commonly between 0.1–4.9 V depending on shutter position; should change smoothly across travel
  • Expected behavior: signal voltage moves monotonically as shutter is commanded; no sudden jumps or dropouts
  • Actuator drive: motor current may be switched or PWM-driven by ECU; expected actuator current usually < 2 A peak (varies by design)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code: clear DTCs, start engine, and use scan tool to command the grille shutter B cycle while watching live data for position signal and commanded position.
  2. If signal is missing or out-of-range, visually inspect the sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion. Repair as needed.
  3. Backprobe the sensor connector: confirm 5V reference, good ground, and measure signal voltage while commanding shutter. Note any intermittent behavior when wiggling harness.
  4. Manually move the shutter (or cycle actuator with scan tool) and verify sensor voltage changes smoothly across travel. If it does not, remove sensor or shutter assembly for bench inspection.
  5. Check continuity between sensor connector and ECM connector; look for opens/shorts to battery or ground. Repair wiring faults and retest.
  6. If wiring and connector check good but signal is incorrect or unstable, replace the position sensor or the shutter assembly per manufacturer procedure.
