What to check

  5. Test the shift solenoid for 3rd gear: measure resistance and apply bench/scan-tool activation while monitoring voltage and current. Replace solenoid if out of spec or intermittent.
  6. With scan tool, command 3rd gear while monitoring apply pressure and actual gear ratio. If the TCM commands but hydraulic pressure does not rise, suspect valve body, regulator, or internal leaks.
  7. Perform hydraulic pressure tests at specified test ports (manufacturer specs) to verify clutch apply pressure for 3rd gear. Low pressure indicates pump/regulator/valve body/clutch leak.
  8. Remove pan and inspect filter and fluid for debris. If large amounts of metal are present, consider internal mechanical failure; inspect clutch packs and planetary sets when accessible.
  9. If hydraulic and solenoid tests are good but the gear still won’t engage, inspect valve body (clean/repair or replace), and check clutch pack condition. Consider remanufactured valve body or clutch pack replacement where appropriate.
