Causes

What to check

  • Visually inspect pedal connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Check for communication errors on the vehicle data bus (CAN) related to pedal module
  • Monitor live APP sensor values (sensor 1 and sensor 2) while operating the pedal
  • Confirm presence of reference voltage (typically ~5 V) and ground at pedal connector

Signal parameters

  • APP reference voltage: approximately 5 V (measure at harness reference pin)
  • APP sensor outputs: typically in the ~0.5 V to ~4.5 V range across pedal travel
  • Dual-sensor correlation: sensor A and sensor B should change in expected relationship (one often increases while the other decreases or both increase but at different slopes)
  • Idle/rest voltages: sensor outputs should be stable and repeatable at rest
  • Data bus messages: accelerator position may appear as percentage (0–100%) or raw counts over CAN; loss of messages indicates comms issue

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner, read and record all codes and freeze-frame data; note any related codes.
  2. Verify battery voltage and primary engine/chassis grounds are good before electrical testing.
  3. Visually inspect the pedal assembly connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or water entry; repair as needed.
  4. With key ON (engine OFF), backprobe the pedal connector: confirm reference voltage (~5 V), ground, and both sensor outputs present and stable.
  5. Slowly depress and release the pedal while monitoring both sensor voltages/live values: verify they change smoothly across the range and maintain expected correlation (not identical or stuck).
  6. If voltages are out of range, trace wiring for opens/shorts to power or ground. Check continuity and resistance to ECU connector; repair broken wires or pins.
  7. Perform a wiggle/strain test of the harness and connectors while monitoring live data to catch intermittent faults.
  8. If wiring and voltages OK but signals invalid, swap or replace the accelerator pedal assembly (or sensor module) and retest.
  9. If pedal assembly replacement does not clear the issue, check CAN/communication lines and related modules; run module diagnostics and update ECU software if recommended by manufacturer.
  10. After repairs, erase codes, perform any required throttle/pedal adaptations or calibrations per manufacturer procedure, then road-test to confirm the fault does not return.
