Malfunction of throttle actuator 1 Throttle malfunction

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty throttle body / throttle actuator motor
  • Damaged or corroded wiring harness or connector to throttle body
  • Open/short in actuator control circuit or power/ground supply
  • Faulty accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor or sensor correlation error
  • Carbon buildup or mechanical binding of throttle plate
  • Low battery voltage or poor charging system

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine power / limp-home mode
  • Poor or delayed throttle response and hesitation
  • Unstable or high/low idle
  • Possible engine stall during idle or decel
  • Throttle warning message or lamp in instrument cluster

What to check

  • Read and record stored DTCs and freeze-frame data with a factory-level scan tool
  • Check battery voltage and charging system; ensure battery is fully charged (ideally >12.4 V at rest)
  • Visually inspect throttle body connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose pins
  • Check fuses and relays related to throttle control
  • Scan live data: compare accelerator pedal sensor(s) vs commanded throttle vs actual throttle position
  • Attempt to command throttle open/closed with diagnostic tool while observing response

Signal parameters

  • Accelerator pedal position sensor A (APP A) – percent or volts
  • Accelerator pedal position sensor B (APP B) – percent or volts (should correlate with A)
  • Desired/Commanded throttle position – percent (0–100%)
  • Actual throttle plate position – percent (0–100%)
  • Throttle actuator motor current – amps (watch for excessive or zero current)
  • Control module supply voltage – volts (should be stable near battery voltage)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all DTCs and freeze-frame data. Note any related codes (APP, CAN, battery).
  2. Verify battery voltage and charging system. Recharge or replace weak battery before continuing.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the throttle body harness and connector. Repair any damaged wiring, bent pins, or corrosion.
  4. Check related fuses/relays and replace if faulty.
  5. With a scan tool, monitor APP sensors and throttle commanded vs actual while operating the accelerator; look for mismatch or no movement.
  6. Perform a wiggle test of wiring/connectors while monitoring live data to find intermittent faults.
  7. If throttle plate is heavily carboned or sticking, clean the throttle body per factory procedure and re-test.
  8. Command the throttle actuator to move using a diagnostic tool. If actuator does not respond, measure motor resistance and motor supply voltage/ground at the connector.
  9. If motor draws excessive current or resistance is out of spec, replace the throttle body assembly.
  10. If actuator and wiring test good but fault remains, check APP sensor correlation (P2135-style failures) and replace APP module if needed.
  11. After repairs, clear codes, perform throttle/idle relearn or adaptation per service manual, then road test to confirm repair.
  12. If problem persists, consider ECM software update or ECM replacement as directed by dealer service information.

Likely causes

  • Wiring/connectors to the throttle body are open, shorted, or corroded
  • Throttle actuator motor or internal throttle body electronics failed
  • Throttle plate mechanically sticking from carbon/contamination
  • APP sensor mismatch or signal fault causing control errors
  • Intermittent low battery/voltage causing actuator malfunction

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P1611 – Throttle Actuator 1 Malfunction: ECM detected throttle actuator or control circuit fault. May limit engine power and place vehicle in limp mode until condition is resolved.
