Motorised throttle spring fault

Brand: FIAT

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Broken, weak or detached throttle return spring
  • Throttle plate binding due to carbon/soot or foreign debris
  • Incorrect assembly or damaged internal throttle body components
  • Throttle actuator motor or gear damage affecting spring load
  • Faulty throttle position sensor or pedal position sensor causing inconsistent feedback
  • Wiring, connector corrosion or power/ground faults to the throttle actuator

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine power / limp-home mode
  • Poor or delayed throttle response
  • Unstable or high/low idle; possible stalling at idle
  • Throttle-related fault message on dash
  • Unusual noise from throttle body area during operation

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame data and all stored DTCs with a diagnostic scanner
  • Check live data: target throttle angle vs actual throttle angle, accelerator pedal position, TPS values at key positions
  • Perform a visual inspection of the throttle body for carbon deposits, foreign objects and physical damage
  • Inspect wiring harness and connectors for corrosion, damage, or poor contacts; check power (12V) and 5V reference and ground at throttle body
  • Command throttle open/close using a scan tool (active tests) and observe movement and current draw
  • Manually operate throttle plate (with ignition off and following safety procedures) to feel for binding or broken spring components

Signal parameters

  • Target throttle angle (%) or degrees (idle ≈ 0–10%)
  • Actual throttle angle (%) or degrees
  • Accelerator pedal position sensor 1 & 2 (%) or voltage (should correlate with target)
  • TPS voltage or percentage at closed and wide-open positions (compare to spec)
  • Motor supply voltage (battery 12V) and ground integrity
  • Actuator current draw (abnormal high current suggests binding or mechanical fault)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and log all DTCs and freeze-frame data; do not clear codes yet.
  2. Visually inspect throttle body, intake tract and connectors for contamination, damage or foreign objects.
  3. Using a scan tool, compare target vs actual throttle angle and pedal position sensors while performing pedal inputs; note any mismatch or slow response.
  4. Perform an active test to command throttle open/close and observe movement, noise and current draw. If binding or abnormal current, stop and investigate mechanically.
  5. With ignition off and following safety precautions, carefully move the throttle plate by hand to check for smooth travel and feel for broken spring or play in mechanism.
  6. Inspect wiring: verify 5V reference, signal voltages, battery voltage to actuator and good ground. Repair any wiring/connector faults.
  7. Remove and inspect throttle body if mechanical fault or heavy carbon is suspected; clean and re-inspect spring, gears and shaft for wear or breakage.
  8. If spring or internal mechanical parts are damaged, replace throttle body or manufacturer-specified repair kit.
  9. After repair or replacement, perform throttle relearn/calibration per manufacturer procedure and clear codes.
  10. Road test to confirm symptom resolution and re-scan for codes.

Likely causes

  • Carbon buildup causing plate to stick (common)
  • Worn or broken return spring or spring retainer
  • Mechanical damage inside throttle body (gears, shaft, bearings)
  • Connector/ground problem to the throttle actuator motor or TPS
  • Failed throttle actuator motor or internal gear fault

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Motorised throttle spring fault detected — possible mechanical return/spring failure or binding in throttle body. May cause reduced power or limp mode.
