Throttle Pedal Position Sensor A Circuit Error Message From Engine Control

Causes

  • Open or short in pedal position sensor A wiring (power, ground or signal)
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the accelerator pedal module
  • Faulty accelerator pedal position sensor (potentiometer or Hall-effect module)
  • Intermittent contact from wiring harness damage or chafing
  • 5 V reference or ground fault from ECM/power module
  • Failed or updated software/calibration required in ECM

Symptoms

  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode
  • Delayed or poor throttle response
  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Stored DTCs related to throttle/pedal sensors (may include other sensor codes)
  • Possible hard starting or stalling in severe cases

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Visual inspection of the accelerator pedal module, connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion or pin push-out
  • Backprobe pedal sensor connector and measure voltages with ignition ON (do not start)
  • Verify 5 V reference supply and good ground at pedal connector
  • Measure sensor A signal voltage at rest and while slowly pressing pedal — watch for smooth change
  • Compare sensor A to sensor B (if present) for correlation and expected opposite/linear relationship

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage: approximately 4.5–5.0 V (ignition ON)
  • Ground: near 0 V at pedal connector
  • Sensor A signal low (pedal rest): typically ~0.5–1.0 V (manufacturer-specific)
  • Sensor A signal high (pedal fully depressed): typically ~4.0–4.5 V
  • Signal should change smoothly without jumps or dropouts when pedal is moved
  • If dual sensors present, correlation between A and B should follow manufacturer expected relationship (not identical noise or opposing values)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes, freeze frame and clear codes. Attempt to reproduce to confirm recurrence.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the accelerator pedal assembly, wiring harness and connector for damage, pins pushed out, corrosion or signs of moisture.
  3. Backprobe the pedal connector with ignition ON. Confirm 5 V reference and ground present and stable. If reference or ground missing, trace back to ECM and fuses.
  4. Measure sensor A signal voltage at rest and while pressing pedal slowly. Look for smooth linear change and expected voltage range. Note any intermittent drops or spikes.
  5. If vehicle has redundant sensors, measure sensor B simultaneously and compare behavior. Use graphing function on scan tool if available.
  6. Wiggle harness and connector while monitoring signals to find intermittent faults. Repair any broken wires, shorts or poor connector pins.
  7. If wiring and connector are good and signals remain out of range or erratic, replace the accelerator pedal position sensor assembly per manufacturer procedure.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and perform a test drive. Verify no reoccurrence and perform any required accelerator pedal adaptations/calibrations with scan tool.
  9. If problems persist after pedal replacement, inspect ECM input circuits and related fuses/grounding points or consult manufacturer diagnostics for module replacement or reprogramming.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/loose connector at the accelerator pedal assembly
  • Broken or shorted signal/power/ground wire between pedal and engine control module
  • Faulty pedal position sensor A (internal electronics)
