Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all stored codes, freeze-frame data and monitor live O2 pump current / lambda readings with a capable scan tool.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of Bank 1 Sensor 3, its wiring and connector for damage, corrosion, melted insulation or signs of contamination.
  3. Verify sensor heater operation (if equipped): measure heater supply voltage and resistance; compare to spec. Replace sensor if heater is dead.
  4. Backprobe the sensor connector and monitor pump-current parameter while the engine is running. Note whether the measured value is consistently low or intermittent.
  5. Wiggle harness and connectors while watching live pump-current data to identify intermittent wiring faults or connector issues.
  6. Check for exhaust leaks upstream of the sensor (smoke test or visual). Repair any leak and re-test.
  7. Inspect/repair any damaged wiring. Repair splices or replace harness sections rather than using temporary fixes.
  8. If wiring and connectors check OK, swap with a known-good identical sensor (if available) or temporarily install a known-good sensor to confirm sensor vs ECM fault.
  9. If a replacement sensor also shows the same low reading and wiring is good, consider ECM/PCM driver fault and consult manufacturer procedures for ECM testing or reprogramming.
  10. Clear codes and perform a relearn/drive cycle; verify the code does not return and monitor fuel trims and emissions behavior.
